Rising 9th Grade Summer Work
ENGLISH
During summer vacation, we request students spend time reading to continue developing their ability to complexly engage texts. Students should purchase the books required for their class and read the works over the summer. We do not assign writing over the break, but encourage active reading through annotation. Please note that if a student changes their course level over the summer, they are responsible for the summer reading assigned for the section to which they are moving.
Students should be prepared for a summer reading assessment the first day of class. This test is designed to gauge whether they have closely read.

To get you started, here are are few helpful hints from the 9th grade English teachers:
- Read in a way that would make Mr. Hickerson proud. If you have been studying themes and symbols, read looking for themes and symbols, for example.
- TAKE NOTES AS YOU READ. Write notes in your book when something seems important or unclear. Highlight quotes that are interesting or puzzling. Use sticky notes so that you can quickly find your questions or notes. If you rented or borrowed your book, have a notebook available to write down this information. Be sure to note what page number, too!
Enjoy your summer! We look forward to seeing you all in August!
